Day1. La Paz - Sajama – Base Camp (4750m/15.584ft)
We leave from the hotel around 09h00 and today’s route takes us on a nice tour across the Altiplano. We start by driving south to the small town Patacamaya where we turn West and the rest of the way we are guided by the imposing stratovolcano Sajama. On our way, we visit the Chulpas which are burial chambers from the pre-Colombian era, now empty because of systematic pillage.
A few kilometers before we reach the Sajama National Park we stop at the small village Curahuara de Carangas. The town's colonial church is known as the Sistine Chapel of the Altiplano, because of its perfectly conserved frescos, painted solely with natural paint.
After this impressive visit, we continue to the small lonely town of Sajama. From the asphalted road that leads all the way to the Chillenian border, we turn right and follow a small bumpy trail that leads into the Sajama National Park.
We meet our team of mule drivers and their animals at Sajama and we hike through Queñua forests, the highest forests in the world to base camp.
Day2. Sajama Base Camp – Sajama High Camp (5550m/18.208ft)
Again helped by the mules we hike to High Camp at 5700m/18.208ft. We hike some 5-7 hours through accumulations of volcanic rock on the north side of the valley, bringing us to the north-western ridge which we use to climb a large corridor between two old lave streams. From here we have a wonderful view of the Payachatas, the twin mountains Parinacota and Pomerata.
Day3. High Camp – Sajama Summit Attempt (6542m/21.463ft) – Tomarapi
We left High Camp at 5h00 to attempt to reach the summit from the north-western side. We arrive at a small passage of 50° followed by a ridge before reaching the summit. We redescend to the thermal sources where we can swim and relax before a car brings us to the small village Tomarapi.
Day4. Sajama – La Paz
After a good night’s rest, we leave Tomarapi to discover the Sajama National Park. We visit the geothermal fields and we’ll take a swim in the thermal springs. After lunch, we return to La Paz. End of our services.
