Day1. Rurrenabaque – Selva (Jungle)

At 08h30 our Tacana guide picks us up and a short walk brings us to the port where a boat will be waiting to take us to the Eco Lodge where we get installed in our typical cabañas. We then leave for a trek where our guide will teach us about the Tacanas’ traditional hunting techniques. He will explain about the different types of traps and how the indigenous people hunt the jaguar, monkey, deer, tapir, and wild boar for their meat and their fur.

After this introduction to hunting, we return to the lodge for lunch which will of course consist of local dishes. After a short “siesta” we continue our visit and we walk to the indigenous Tacana community where our guide will explain about the daily life in the community and about agriculture, construction techniques, local traditions and customs, religion and handicrafts. We have the possibility to discover how to extract juice from sugar cane with a manual sugar cane press. We can return to the lodge on foot or by boat and after a delicious dinner the evening is free.

Day2. Selva

The day starts with tropical bird songs and a nice breakfast by the river and your guide will join you after to explain the day’s activities. After breakfast, you will take the canoe a bit further upriver to the mouth of a stream that flows into the Rio Beni. From there your guide will lead you along the stream for a short 20-minute hike up to a waterfall that has a natural pool below where you can take a refreshing dip after your hike and relax in the soothing waters. We return to the lodge for lunch and a well deserved “siesta” and later we have the choice between 2 activities.

You can walk with your guide through the forest the so-called “pharmacy” to explore the wonders of medicinal plant life. Your guide will share his knowledge of the forest and the abundance of plant life that the Tacana have used for years to help with basic ailments such as stomachaches and colds all the way to dealing with anemia and other more serious conditions. Experience what the forest has to offer, and even try to take some medicine with you for your next run-in with bad street food in La Paz.

You can go to the canyon and experience the cool and damp ecosystem. Explore a canyon 150m/492ft long canyon with all the wonderful creepy crawly things that dark damp places have to offer. This unique trek can be a short walk through the canyon to explore another world, or you can take a 3-hour trek from the lodge along the river, which eventually runs through the canyon as a grand exit to the river.

We return to the lodge for dinner and to get ready for our trip deeper into the jungle of the Madidi National Park.

Day3. Madidi Nationalpark

After an early breakfast leave for a 1 ½ hours boat ride up the Rio Beni into the Madidi National Park. We turn into the Tuichi River which is a smaller more intimate river which gives us the chance to see more animals and birds. Once arrived at the cabins we head out to explore the area and relax before we have lunch. From this area there are 8 trails that lead deeper into the forest, each trail varying in length and difficulty, and in coordination with your guide and the wishes of the group you can explore one of them. In the evening you have the possibility to go for a night trek.

Day4. Madidi Nationalpark

After a delicious breakfast, we spend the rest of the day exploring the Madidi National Park in greater depth. We can take a trip further up the Tuichi to explore other paths which the Tacana have created for forest exploration. We return to the lodge for lunch and in the afternoon you can relax in hammocks or continue your exploration of the wonderful Madidi National Park.

Day5. Madidi Nationalpark - Rurrenabaque

After a delicious breakfast, you have the possibility to explore the national park the entire morning. You can also get up very early in order to go see the macaws leaving their nests to go hunting, or you can just walk through the jungle to admire the spectacular flora and fauna of the national park. We have lunch at the lodge before a boat will take us back to Rurrenabaque. If you’re flying out the same day make sure to inform your guide so you can leave a little earlier if necessary.
