Top 10 Places To Visit In Sucre

Sucre, Bolivia

Sucre, Bolivia’s constitutional capital, is a city full of colonial charm, rich history, and breathtaking landscapes. Known as the "White City", Sucre offers stunning architecture, cultural landmarks, and natural beauty. If you're planning a visit, here are the top 10 must-visit places in Sucre!

1. Plaza 25 de Mayo

This is Sucre’s main square and the central hub of its historical core. It’s one of the prettiest plazas in Bolivia, with an abundance of trees that create some beautifully shaded areas in which to shelter from the heat of the midday sun. Despite being surrounded by busy roads, and permanently frequented by crowds of locals and tourists, it manages to retain a sense of peace and tranquility.

2. Convento de San Felipe Neri

Of all the ‘attractions’ in Sucre this was one of the most photogenic. The building contains beautifully preserved corridors with thoughtful decor and design features and a large inner courtyard. However, the real delight can be found up on the tiled rooftops, where you’ll be rewarded with some incredible 360-degree views of the city.

3. Casa de la Libertad

The site where Bolivia’s Declaration of Independence was signed in 1825. This museum showcases the country’s founding history, original documents, and portraits of national leaders. It’s a must-visit for history lovers.

4. Recoleta Viewpoint (Mirador de La Recoleta)

The best panoramic views of Sucre from a scenic hilltop. Enjoy the whitewashed arches, cobblestone streets, and traditional markets nearby. Visit San Francisco Monastery for a cultural experience.

5. Plaza Recoleta

From Grau, it’s about a 10-minute walk up a very steep hill to reach Plaza Recoleta (or Plaza Pedro de Anzúrez, as it’s also known), but the views from up here make the short hike completely worthwhile. There’s a lovely little café/restaurant located right on the edge of the plaza (isn’t there always? You’d be a fool not to take advantage of the enterprising opportunities a fantastic viewpoint affords) where you can sip a coffee or Pisco Sour and look down on to the city below you.

6. San Felipe de Neri Monastery

A beautiful 18th-century monastery with a stunning rooftop view. Walk along the rooftop terraces for a 360-degree view of Sucre. The interior courtyard and church are also worth exploring.

7. Dinosaur Park & Cal Orck’o

Home to the world’s largest collection of dinosaur footprints. See over 5,000 dinosaur tracks, life-sized dinosaur models, and learn about Bolivia’s prehistoric past. A fun experience for both kids and adults!

8. Glorieta Castle

A unique pink castle with European-inspired architecture. Once home to Bolivia’s only prince and princess, this eccentric castle features Gothic, Baroque, and Renaissance elements. It’s a must-visit for photography lovers.

9. Iglesia de la Merced

A historic church with an impressive interior and rooftop. Climb to the top of the bell tower for amazing views of Sucre, and admire the beautifully painted ceilings and gold altars inside.

10. Tarabuco Market

The best traditional market near Sucre. Located 65 km from Sucre, this market offers handmade textiles, Andean ponchos, and indigenous crafts. It’s the perfect place to buy authentic souvenirs!
