Top 10 Places To Visit In La Paz

La Paz, Bolivia, Bolivia

La Paz, the highest capital city in the world, is a vibrant mix of culture, adventure, and breathtaking landscapes. Nestled in the Andes Mountains, this Bolivian city offers everything from historical landmarks to thrilling outdoor activities. Here are the top 10 must-visit places in La Paz!

1. Plaza Murillo

The main square is surrounded by colonial buildings and government offices. Home to the Presidential Palace, Cathedral of La Paz, and the Bolivian National Congress.Perfect for history lovers and those who want to see the city’s political and cultural center.

2. Museo Nacional del Arte

This colonial building was constructed in 1775 of pink sandstone and has been restored to its original grandeur, in mestizo (mixed) baroque and Andino baroque styles. In the center of a huge courtyard, surrounded by three stories of pillared corridors, is a lovely alabaster fountain. The various levels are dedicated to different eras, with an emphasis on religious themes.

3. Catedral Metropolitana

Although it’s a relatively recent addition to La Paz’s religious structures, the 1835 cathedral is impressive – mostly because it is built on a steep hillside. The main entrance is 12m higher than its base on Calle Potosí. The cathedral’s sheer immensity, with its high dome, hulking columns, thick stone walls, and high ceilings, is overpowering, but the altar is relatively simple.

4. Mi Teleférico

The world’s highest and longest cable car system. Enjoy breathtaking aerial views of the city and the surrounding Andes Mountains. A cheap and efficient way to get around while admiring La Paz from the sky.

5. Valley of the Moon

The fantastically eroded rock formations of Valle de la Luna are located on the outer part of La Paz. These clay and sandstone formations were shaped over thousands of years by wind and rain. The sharp and tall silhouettes reminded me of stalactites turned upside down. The area has two circular walking tracks, one is shorter and takes 15 minutes to complete. The longer one can be completed in 45 minutes. You can’t be lost, because the paths are bordered with bars at some places.

6. Iglesia de San Francisco

The hewed stone basilica of San Francisco was founded in 1548 by Fray Francisco de los Ángeles. The original structure collapsed under heavy snowfall around 1610, but it was rebuilt between 1743 and 1772. The second building is made of stone quarried at nearby Viacha. The facade is decorated with carvings of natural themes such as chirimoyas (custard apples), pine cones, and tropical birds.

7. San Francisco Church

One of the most iconic churches in La Paz. Built-in the 16th century, featuring intricate baroque carvings and a beautiful rooftop view. Explore the adjacent museum for insights into the city’s colonial past.

8. Tiwanaku

A UNESCO World Heritage Site and the remains of an ancient civilization. Just 1.5 hours from La Paz, this pre-Inca city dates back over 1,500 years. See the famous Puerta del Sol (Gateway of the Sun) and massive stone monoliths.

9. Calle Jaén

A well-preserved colonial street lined with museums and cafés. Visit the Museum of Ethnography & Folklore, Museo del Oro (Gold Museum), and Casa de Murillo. The colorful buildings and cobblestone streets create a perfect setting for photography.

10. Witches' Market

A unique market selling traditional Andean remedies and spiritual artifacts. Find amulets, potions, dried llama fetuses, and other Aymara cultural items. Meet the local Yatiri (spiritual healers) who offer fortune readings and blessings.
