In the heart of the Pantanal on Brazil's border, Tamengo is a resort where you can seriously relax.

Whether you´re looking for a base from which to explore the Pantanal, a few days by the pool in the sun or somewhere to take it easy either side of your ´Death Train´ trip, Andres and his team have built a quality environment in which to do it.

Overlooking the Rios Tamengo and Paraguai, they pose a great alternative to staying in Brazil before heading into the swamp. Superb views over the Pantanal into Brazil and across to Corumbà can be had and guests should miss neither the glorious sunrises nor sunsets.

Keep an eye out for the many visiting birds; parrots, toucans, parakeets, hummingbirds are all frequent visitors as you lie by one of the resort’s two swimming pools or laze in a hammock. Highly helpful and friendly staff in clean and beautifully decorated surroundings make for happy travellers.

With Tamengo’s free train booking service you can forget the queues, really chill out, and enjoy the huge amount of tranquil space under the palm trees.

Beds in a 24 bed dormitory with a fan cost B$ 60 per night, in an eight bed room with air conditioning B$ 70 and in the six bed room with air conditioning B$ 80. A double with air conditioning and shared bathroom costs B$ 240 and B$ 120 per extra person with room for 2 more. A double with air conditioning and private bathroom costs B$ 360 and B$ 180 per extra person with room for four more. These prices include a large breakfast of fried or scrambled eggs with fresh warm bread, spreads, fresh fruit, juice and coffee.

Also included for guests are free internet with Skype, WiFi, the use of an extensive DVD library, stereo, chess, cards and other games. A great two-for one deal is to be had on the book exchange.

The hostel’s excellent restaurant (open 12.00-14.00 and 18.00 – 21.00) provides reasonably priced delicious meals, with local specialties and international cuisine available from B$15 to B$35. Look out for the alligator sausage!

The reception / shop sells a number of drinks and snacks as well as insect repellent, sun cream and shower gel, letting towels and organizing laundry, B$ 20 per kilo minimum two kilos and a 48 hour backpack cleaning service for B$ 80. Should you need to sort out your pictures, music and films the hostel will burn them to CD or DVD for you for B$ 10 with disks costing B$5 to B$10. Print-outs are also available for B$ 2. Staff can also organize a number of tours and excursions, be it a longer trip into the Pantanal, piranha fishing, a boat tour, Laguna Càceres or the Caves of Motacucito.

The outside facilities are hard for other hostels to rival here; two swimming pools, two large covered seating areas, a barbeque (B$50 per person, minimum of four), a well-stocked bar, a football court, a vegetable garden and several hammocks.

For no commission cost at all, Tamengo offers an excellent seat-booking service for your ride aboard the daily ´Death Train´. Just let staff know the day before you wish to travel and their arrangement with the railway company ensures your ticket.

If you’re thinking about stopping somewhere for a while, consider the successful volunteering program teaching English in Puerto Quijarro, knowing you’re amongst the first to do so and making a real impact on a small town.
