Package Itinerary

1. La Paz – Tiquina – Altitude Diving Instruction Centre (CIBA - Centro de Instrucción de Buceo en Altura)
We leave La Paz at dawn in a private vehicle for San Pedro de Tiquina, on the shores of Lake Titicaca. After approx. 2 hours drive we cross the Tiquina Strait, which separates the smaller sub-basin with the larger sub-basin (900m/2.953ft wide and 60m/197ft deep). Upon arrival we are greeted by the team of the CIBA, located in the base of the Bolivian Navy (Armada), bordering the Tiquina Strait. We start with a presentation of the CIBA by the Captain of the unit before we try the equipment and take a hyperbaric test in an up-to-date decompression chamber to check our physical aptitude, as well as prepare you physiologically for a high altitude dive. Along with our instructors we then test the equipment and our skills in a swimming pool – for the beginners this is the opportunity to practice the basics of diving. We’re then ready for our scuba diving baptism near the Peñon, a 20m/66ft high rock, located in front of the CIBA on the other side of the Strait, which we reach by zodiac boat. The waters around this iconic rock is blue or emerald green depending on the currents and the algae lining the submerged rocks and this is an ideal place for a first dive in the depths of the Lake Titicaca. You will be offered different levels of diving depending on your ability; 5m/17ft, 10m/33ft, 15m/50ft, 20m/66ft or more. You have the possibility to see the critically endangered Titicaca Water Frog (Telmatobius culeus) in its natural habitat. These particular frogs that only live in the Lake Titicaca have developed the ability to breathe through the skin and during the expedition of the Captain Cousteau in 1968 they were found as deep as 120m/394ft. We return to the naval base around 14h00 for a well deserved lunch and later the director of the CIBA will give each participant a diploma certifying the scuba diving baptism in altitude with mention of the altitude and the depth reached. We return to La Paz and the exact arrival time depends on the traffic in El Alto. End of our services
